Welcome to Homeschool Horizons! I’m Yvette, your host! If you listened to last weeks episode you know that I had surgery and missed a week because of it. I wasn’t sure if I could publish an episode this week even because my recovery has been quite slow. I had a couple of difficult days at the beginning of this week, but praise God I feel better today and that’s why I decided to go ahead and talk to you.  Back in Episode 3 when I talked to you about Charters, I talked about curriculum which happened to be non-religious and this week I will talk to you about another curriculum that I used when my son was little that happens to be religious in nature. Have you ever heard of Superbook? It’s a children’s animated Bible series that was created by The Christian Broadcasting Network back in 1981! I went to their website as research for my podcast and this is what I read, and I quote “It was created as part of an outreach to the nation of Japan. Little did we realize what an impact the series would have in Japan and throughout the world.” (superbook.cbn.com)

Wow, I actually didn’t know any of that! I first discovered the show back when my oldest son was 5 yrs old. I had been doing little bible study lessons with him, but I could tell that he needed something more to help him understand what we were reading and learning about. So I went to YouTube in search of short little animated bible stories that I thought might interest him. It was there that I found Superbook!

I first watched an episode by myself because of course I needed to see if it was good and if it was accurate to the bible, and it was! I couldn’t wait to watch with my son. We watched the episode titled, “In the Beginning,” and my son loved it! I was so overjoyed because I loved it too! I even ended up signing up to have all of the episode dvd’s delivered so that we could own as many episodes as possible.

I really liked how the stories of the bible were shown through the eyes of Chris, the main character and his friends Joy and the robot Gizmo who were in the present world and through the Superbook time travel portal, would find themselves right in the center of whatever bible story was happening in that episode, whether it be David about to battle Goliath or Jonah getting swallowed by the whale. My boys and I enjoyed watching episodes every morning while we ate breakfast. It would spark conversation where we talked about history/social studies, science, and even math! But I couldn’t use it as curriculum with my charter because it’s considered religious. I really do find that so humorous when so much of history is religious. Especially when studying civilizations. In every single one that my sons have studied thus far, there is always a belief in a deity or deities. But, anyway, I continued using it for years and I am so grateful to The Christian Broadcast Network for creating this show.

I wanted to share this with you because the show still airs on various streaming platforms such as YouTube and Amazon Prime. There is even an app where they have games and activities for your child. The most important thing about it is that if you want to teach your child about the Bible, this is an effective curriculum that you can use. It has been so impactful for my family and I know that because of it, my sons have always had a deeper understanding of the historical events that date back as far as 4000 years ago.

If you decide to use it, I pray that it will bless your family as much as it has blessed mine! Thank you so much for listening today!  Talk to you next week!
